Participants in this workshop will examine the events resulting in loss during the developmental stages along one’s life course using the stages of change model.  Personal reflection and exploration will be used in order to fully understand the process in relation to supporting individuals receiving services.  A variety of developmental theories (Erikson; Marcia; Jung as examples) along with several therapeutic modalities (Cognitive-Behavioral; Motivational Interviewing; Positive Psychology) will be explored.  

Training Objectives:

1. Participants will understand a wide array of the manifestation of losses during the developmental and stages of change cycle.

2. Participants will learn about the theories that support several therapeutic modalities which explain and address losses in the developmental and stages of change cycle.

3. Participants will examine the loss events of their own life cycle to practically apply theoretical modalities.

This dynamic, interactive program will include individual and small group activities, and discussions.

Agenda:

9:30 -9:45 -Introductions, overview

9:45 – 10:45 – Exploration of loss through the developmental and stages of change cycles. Small group discussions to differentiate between transitions, turning points and major life events. Activity re: stages of change.

10:45-11:00 – Break

11-12:00 – Review of developmental theories that support therapeutic modalities which would be used to address loss during these cycles (Erikson; Marcia; Jung; Arnett). Small group discussion and activity.; Group activity to explore loss events using a life trajectory. De-briefing with large group.

12:00 – 12:30 Application of theoretical modalities to participant loss events. Fishbowl-style group processing to model an actual participant example, with break outs to small groups to do same. De-briefing with large group and wrap up.


CEU Hours: 

This event is co-sponsored by Bryn Mawr College Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research (GSSWSR) for a maximum of 3 credit hours. Bryn Mawr College GSSWSR, as a CSWE accredited School of Social Work, is a pre-approved provider of continuing education for Social Workers, professional counselors, and marriage and family therapists in Pennsylvania and many other states.

About the Trainer:

Kerry Arnold, M.S.W., LSW is a Full Time Assistant Professor in the Behavioral Health/Human Services program at the Community College of Philadelphia. Kerry is a Licensed Social Worker and received her M.S.W. from Temple University. For 32 years, she has been a behavior specialist, educator, and consultant to a myriad of agencies in the Tri-State area serving individuals with intellectual disabilities and co-occurring disorders, which include substance abuse.

Kerry has presented at city, state and national conferences in the area of recovery-centered, behavioral support planning for individuals receiving behavioral health services. From 2008-2015, she was a primary consultant in New Jersey’s dual-disordered initiative in, spearheaded by Rutgers University.

Kerry has co-hosted a television show sponsored by the Community College of Philadelphia, Tapestry of Life, which features interviews with people who have a lived or direct support experience with some aspect of behavioral health/stigma and oppression and their path toward healing. Kerry has facilitated several conferences within Community College of Philadelphia, including LGBTQ awareness and Trauma-Informed Approaches.

If you have paid the fee, you will receive a refund or credit (your choice). If you fail to cancel prior to five business days and have paid, you or your agency will forfeit the fee.
